Tree protection & restricted access

Protection begins
before excavation.

Understand the constraints. Agree the method. Protect what the project depends on.

A site-specific approach

Work with the
whole picture.

A tree’s roots extend beyond the visible trunk. Working near established trees starts with understanding root protection areas, existing services, proposed construction and the conditions attached to the site.

We plan our work around BS 5837 recommendations, the project’s tree protection plan and arboricultural method statement, with supervision where specified. These inform access routes, equipment positioning, excavation methods and the care of exposed roots.

Air excavation or moling may be useful parts of that plan. Neither is a blanket permission to excavate inside a root protection area.

Above ground

Getting in
without overlooking it.

  • Measure the narrowest opening and assess corners and steps
  • Position the compressor in a suitable ventilated outdoor area
  • Agree access routes, ground protection and exclusion areas
  • Match compressor airflow to the selected tool

Below ground

Find out
before moving on.

  • Review available service records and arrange locating
  • Use investigation and trial excavations where required
  • Follow agreed methods for exposing and protecting roots
  • Reassess when unexpected conditions are encountered

Guidance behind the approach

Informed by
recognised guidance.

BS 5837 covers trees in relation to design, demolition and construction. HSE’s HSG47 sets out the central elements of avoiding danger from underground services: planning, locating and identifying services, and safe excavation.

Site permissions, statutory requirements and the project’s professional advice remain specific to the proposed work.
